چکیده

In vivo indentation properties of the residual limb tissues of a group of senior subjects with below-knee (BK) amputation were measured and compared with those of nondisabled young adults. It was found that differences attributable to site variations, states of muscular activity, and the differences between the nondisabled young group and the group consisting of the seniors with amputation were all noted to be highly significant statistically. However, paired comparison between the residual limb and the sound contralateral limb of the senior group showed no significant difference. Residual limb properties measured right before the first prosthetic measurements and fittings and those measured at the first outpatient follow-up were found to be slightly different.

State-of-the-art methods for geometric and biomechanical assessments of residual limbs: a review.

A review is presented on the state-of-the-art methods for geometric and biomechanical assessments of residual limb tissues. Residual limb assessments are needed throughout different stages of prosthetic management, namely preamputation, residual limb maturation, prosthetic design, prosthetic fitting, and subsequent follow-ups. Geometric assessments include the monitoring of the volumetric chang...

Interface shear stresses during ambulation with a below-knee prosthetic limb.

Shear stresses on a residual limb in a prosthetic socket are considered clinically to contribute to tissue breakdown in below-knee amputees. When applied simultaneously with normal stresses, they can cause injury within the skin or can generate an abrasion on the surface. To gain insight into shear stresses and parameters that affect them, interface stresses were recorded on below-knee amputee ...

The effects of prosthetic ankle dorsiflexion and energy return on below-knee amputee leg loading.

BACKGROUND Prosthetic devices are intended to return lower limb amputees to their pre-amputation functional status. However, prosthetic devices designed for unilateral below-knee amputees have yet to completely restore the biomechanical functions normally provided by the ankle muscles, leading to gait asymmetries and increased reliance on their intact leg. In an effort to improve amputee gait, ...

Volume changes occurring in postoperative below-knee residual limbs.

Comparative maturation rates of 36 below-knee postoperative, healed amputation residual limbs were observed. Measured were the limb volumes and circumferences. Three methods of residual limb stabilization were employed: 1) elastic wrap; 2) plaster cast and pylon; and, 3) plastic laminate socket and pylon. The limbs receiving the plastic laminate showed the most rapid stabilization, while the el...
